By Lynn Taylor • The spring concert by the Lower Columbia College Symphonic Band showcased a wide variety of music and talents. . I once heard a band director say that the last piece at a band concert should always be a march. This concert ended (almost) with a march, "Transit of Venus," by John Philip Sousa. It is named for the astronomical phenomenon in which the planet Venus crosses the face of the sun. This will be occurring on June 5 (Don’t look directly at the sun without eye protection to see it!). This march is very typical of a Sousa march, except that it ended before my foot was ready to quit tapping. Before Mr. Harbaugh had a chance to direct his encore piece, alto saxophone player Dr. Chris Collins spoke to the audience, honoring Mr. Harbaugh for his time as interim director of the band. He received a well-deserved standing ovation from the musicians and the audience.

Review by Ed Phillips • Although written and performed off Broadway in the late 1980s and made into a movie in 1991, “Other People’s Money” remains surprisingly relevant today. Bain Capital’s (some might say "Pain Capital") role in reallocating resources in our economy is just an extension of what Lawrence Garfinkle, aka Louie the Liquidator, is performing in the play. His final speech at the stockholders' meeting is as good a summary of financial capital’s putative role in economic progress that I have seen on stage or screen.

The Spectator • By Ned Piper • We have friends who drive to Portland, even Seattle, in search of weekend fun. They may be looking for a unique dining experience, a dance floor brought to life by a lively band, a bar or a lounge with character. What they seem to forget is that there are such venues right here in their own backyard. Step out the door. Head for the hills and for Birkenfeld.

By Greg Smith • The last half of May and the first half on June will bring us some very impressive daytime sky shows. The first will be a partial eclipse of the sun.. . The second major event is one of a lifetime. Venus will put on a fantastic show this June as it catches up and bypasses Earth in its orbit. It will cross in front of the Sun, in what is called a “transit,” on Tuesday June 5, starting around 3 pm (PDT) and lasting through sunset. The last time it did this was eight years ago on June 8, 2004, but prior to that it was in 1882, and it will not happen again until your (great) great grandchildren see it in December of 2117! This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime occurrence.

Titled “George and Friends: Keyboard Wizards of the Gershwin Era,” the May 20 program will be more like a mixed media experience than a regular recital, Kauble explained. Johnson, head of piano studies at Seattle Pacific University, will combine piano performance and lecture in a visual presentation based not just on Gershwin and his music, but also on Gershwin’s followers.

Horse races pitting one horse against all the others in the field, with the winner crossing the finish line first. Barrel racing, rodeos and related events are won or lost based on the stop watch. The fastest error-free time wins. These are all “timed events.” Horse competition not based on time or head-to-head match up would include things like dressage or jumping.
